World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed globally on June 15th, led by the United Nations (UN). It serves as a call to action against the mistreatment and neglect experienced by older adults. This day aims to raise awareness about elder abuse, its various forms, and the need to protect and empower our seniors.

Raising Awareness

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day promotes understanding and recognition of the widespread problem of elder abuse. Through educational campaigns, community events, and media outreach, the initiative aims to break the silence surrounding this issue and encourage reporting of abuse or neglect.

Understanding Elder Abuse

Elder abuse takes various forms, such as physical, emotional, psychological, financial abuse, neglect, and abandonment. It violates the fundamental human rights of older adults and undermines their well-being and dignity.

Protecting Our Seniors

This day emphasizes the importance of ensuring older adults’ safety, respect, and dignity. Governments, organizations, and individuals are urged to take proactive steps in preventing elder abuse, implementing protective measures, strengthening legislation, and providing support services.

Building Networks and Collaboration

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day encourages collaboration among sectors, governments, civil society, and academia. It aims to share best practices, research, and interventions to prevent and address elder abuse, creating comprehensive strategies that combat ageism and establish age-friendly societies.

Empowering Older Adults

Beyond raising awareness and fostering collaboration, this day empowers older adults themselves. It recognizes their agency and capacity to contribute to society. It promotes their rights, autonomy, and active participation in decision-making processes.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us of the global issue of elder abuse and the need for action. By protecting and empowering older adults, fostering collaboration, and raising awareness, we can create a society that values and respects its senior members. Let us work towards a future where older adults live free from abuse, supported by robust care systems, and surrounded by communities that cherish their contributions.
